MRT HISTORY

Since 1996, Mississippi River Trail, Inc. has been the catalyst for the creation of one of the most aggressive and innovative trail development projects in the United States. Coursing through 10 states, along one or both sides of the Mississippi River, America’s transportation backbone, the trail reminds us of our culture, heritage, uniqueness, and oneness.

On the caliber of other key national trails, the Mississippi River Trail offers a myriad of experiences and opportunities to delight cycling enthusiasts and other trail users. On-road corridor and designated separate bike/pedestrian pathways weave together to create an exciting and special experience for individuals of every level of desire and ability.

Many notable successes have been accomplished since Mississippi River Trail, Inc. was founded. Friends, supporters, and contributors should take great pride in their involvement with MRT, Inc. The foundation has been developed cautiously and with great care for sustainability. Key accomplishments include:

  • Designation in 2000 as one of sixteen National Millennium Trails.
  • Acquisition in 2005 for $33+ million plus in corridor trail project funding for five states through the passage of SAFETEALU part of HR3, the current Federal Highway Administration Funding Bill.
  • Completed route signing in five states.
  • Establishment of long-term partnerships with key national, regional, state, municipal, and local agencies and organizations to plan, create, and manage all trail segments.
  • Development of this website which encourages corridor visitation and exploration, trail support and volunteerism, trails advocacy, and links to a myriad of resources, partners, suppliers, and providers.
